3 Books to Check Out ( in 2017)

Happy New year folks! About a year ago I decided to dramatically reduce the amount of TV that I watch and focus more on podcasts and books. It was hard letting go of the Real Housewives of the world and Love and Hip Hop (lawd....the struggle!), but in the end it was so worth it!

I truly believe that the right combination of books, can be more valuable than a second degree. Especially if you read not just for fun, or to get excited, but if at the end of it you leave with specific action points on how to incorporate what you just learned into your daily life!

In today's post, I'd like to share the 3 books that I LOVED the most and absolutely recommend for everyone to read! I'll keep commentary on each short since.......well you need to go get the book lol.

Why She Buys by Bridget Brennan

Why She Buys by Bridget Brennan

This book was absolutely genius, and I think its a must read for ALL entrepreneurs, not just entrepreneurs who sell to women.

The book starts with a story of a time that she and her husband were shopping for a car, and the salesman ignored her and spoke only to the husband about all of the cool features, horesepower etc. She raised a concern about having only one cupholder, since she usually needed one for her coffee and one for her baby and the salesman brushed the comment off and talked up the more "important" features to the husband......they eventually bought the same exact car from another dealer who listened and switched out the cupholder.

The moral of the story is that the sale of most items, from household items, to shared cars and even to men's clothes are driven by women. Think about it, many men wear designers that were first purchased for them by wives or sisters. So the question is, what get's a woman's buy in, whether you're selling a product or a service?

This book answered it so brilliantly. And even as a woman, I learned a lot from it and it changed my whole frame of mind when it comes to sales and business!

Instinct by Bishop TD Jakes

Instinct by Bishop TD Jakes

This book came with many many revelations. And to be honest, this is going back on my reading list for 2017. I need to read it again.

I love that Bishop TD Jakes walks you through many critical decisions that he made in life - the decision to move to Texas, to expand his church, to take loans etc and how he channeled his instinct to help make decisions that eventually propelled him into an awesome future.

By the way, I don't see this as a "how to" book -- its something better. This book challenged me to think differently and to challenge my decision making process. And it challenged me to trust my instincts which at some point, I started trying to "shush" and replace with over-thought-out logic.

Of course, as a Bishop, there are some spiritual tie ins with this book, but the truth is that this book is filled with lots of practical wisdom for everyone regardless of what you believe in. I loved it and can't wait to read it again!

I really liked this book because it wasn't entirely what I thought it would be - a blueprint on how to wait until marriage to have sex.

It was more about juggling finding yourself, discovering your passions, and understanding what you want and need while also not being so glued to a list. And then of course, the importance of waiting until marriage to have sex. It was an awesome read on how to balance it all. And in the end, how to end up with a GREAT partner, not just "good enough." [AMEN to that!]

The vulnerability that both Megan Good and Devon Franklin allowed themselves to have while writing it really helped as well because they weren't just talking at you with what to do, but spent a lot of time telling their stories and opening up about the things they felt and thought while waiting. I recommend this to all young Christians who aren't married!

P.S. I also just love Devon Franklin's message in general because its so sad that we live in a culture where the world and the church alike only expects women to wait until marriage, but men do what they want. And women are expected to be the ones to make a man wait........not meet a man who is also waiting (again, this tends to be the expectation even in church!).

But Devon challenges men to stop making excuses and to invest in their own purity and spirituality. As he says "if a dog walks in and starts peeing everywhere, every man would say we need to train that dog. Well if a dog can be trained to stop those urges, why can't you?" (o0o0o0o - food for thought!). On that note imma start here before I go into other topics lol.

So there you have it folks! I hope you are as excited about these books as I was about reading them! I'm sure that each of them will empower and inspire you to live your best life, just like they helped me! Leave a comment below if you've read/heard about any of these books. I'd love to hear your thoughts!!
